Mobic

Mobic® (meloxicam) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions related to pain, inflammation, swelling, or stiffness.

Mobic and other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) work by inhibiting the action of certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. These hormones are called prostaglandins. By blocking the effects of prostaglandins, Mobic can help alleviate pain, inflammation, and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis.

Benefits

If you have pain or inflammation, you may benefit from Mobic® ( meloxicam). In particular, Mobic has been shown to be beneficial for treating pain, inflammation, swelling, and/or stiffness caused by:

Mobic helps treat these conditions by inhibiting the action of certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

The drug comes in the form of a tablet or a liquid and is available in three different strengths.

Arthritis and what Mobic can do to help

Arthritis is one of the first medical conditions to affect the human race. In fact, it is often referred to as the most common condition found in prehistoric people. The first documented traces of arthritis date back to 4500 BC. Some Egyptian mummies have been diagnosed with arthritis and in 1715, the first book was published about arthritis and the effects it has on the human body. It is a medical condition that can be caused by a number of factors, most commonly the wear and tear of the joints. It is a condition that affects the joints and causes mainly pain in the joints which can sometimes be quite severe. Of course, there are other symptoms of arthritis, including swelling, stiffness in the joints while some particular types of arthritis can cause some even more serious symptoms. There are different types of arthritis and depending on the type; the medications that are used are different as well. Mobic is particular is used for occurrences of inflammations caused by arthritis. These inflammations entail severe pain, swelling, joint stiffness as well as fevers in some cases. Mobic helps with all these symptoms, even the fever as it has certain fever reducer effects. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID for short and it is superior to most other NSAIDs in as it has much less pronounced gastrointestinal side effects which are the most important and serious side effects of NSAIDs. It also has to be noted that Mobic is used in the veterinary field as well, primarily in dogs.

Mobic Uses

Mobic has been licensed for the relief of signs and symptoms associated with:

The medication is not a cure for these types of arthritis, however, nor does it slow down the progression of the disease.

By blocking the effects of prostaglandins, Mobic is useful at reducing pain, inflammation, and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis and other painful conditions.

Can Children Use It?

Mobic is approved for the treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children two years of age and older.

Using Mobic Off-Label

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Mobic for treating something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an “off-label” use. Some examples of off-label Mobic uses include the relief of:

Side Effects

Important information about Mobic

Mobic may cause life-threatening heart or circulation problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term. Do not use Mobic just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Get emergency medical help if you have chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.

Mobic may also cause serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and can occur without warning while you are taking Mobic, especially in older adults.

Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of stomach bleeding such as black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other cold, allergy, or pain medicine. Medicines similar to meloxicam are contained in many combination medicines. Check the label to see if a medicine contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

You must not use Mobic during pregnancy or if you are trying to become pregnant due to possible harm to the unborn baby and interference with normal labor/delivery.

Tell your doctor before using Mobic if you are breast-feeding. It is not known whether using Mobic during breastfeeding is dangerous. There are no data on the excretion of Mobic into human milk; however, Mobic was excreted in the milk of lactating rats at concentrations higher than those in plasma. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the nursing mother.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Mobic: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using Mobic and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

Less serious Mobic side effects may include:

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Before taking Mobic

Do not use Mobic just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

This medicine may cause life-threatening heart or circulation problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term.

Mobic may also cause serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and can occur without warning while you are taking Mobic, especially in older adults.

You should not use Mobic if you are allergic to meloxicam, or if you have a history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs.

To make sure you can safely take Mobic, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:

Mobic and Weight Gain

Many people wonder, “Will I gain weight on Mobic?” In clinical studies, less than 2 percent of people taking the drug gained weight. If you happen to notice a gradual weight gain while taking this medication, there are a number of things that you can do to help, such as getting regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week; limiting your intake of alcohol; and eating a heart-healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, among other things.

There are a number of problems that have been reported in people taking Mobic® (meloxicam). Gradual weight gain is one problem that is reported rarely. In previous clinical studies, weight gain occurred in less than 2 percent of people taking Mobic. Given how uncommon weight gain is, however, it is difficult to say whether it is actually caused by the medication, other factors, or a combination of both.

Understanding Clinical Trials

Before medicines are approved, they must go through several clinical studies in which thousands of people are given a particular medicine and compared to a group of people not given the medicine. In these studies, side effects are always documented. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they occur, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. Side effects are then usually separated into those that occur more in than 1 to 2 percent of people and those that occur in less than 1 to 2 percent of people.

Weight gain was seen in less than 2 percent of people taking Mobic. Weight gain also occurred just as often in the group of people not taking Mobic. This is why it is not possible to say whether the medication, other factors, or a combination of both played a role in this gradual weight gain.

What other drugs will affect Mobic?

Ask your doctor before using an antidepressant such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, Symbyax), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), or sertraline (Zoloft). Taking any of these medicines with an NSAID may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:

This list is not complete and other drugs may interact with Mobic. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Inflammatory Conditions: I have been taking Mobic (meloxicam) for about nine months. When I stay on the drug I have little or no back pain. If I stop for even two days the pain comes back. But once I start again the pain is gone in one or two days. It has helped me tremendously.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Osteoarthritis: I have been using Mobic every other day for a week now, and my pain is almost diminished. My fingers don't hurt as bad, and I can make a full fist without hurting. The pain in my upper legs is gone, and I can move once again like I am 30. I am 63! The side effects worry me some, so that is why I do not take it every day.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Fibromyalgia: Works well for joint pain but not much for the entire Fibromyalgia package of muscle pain, weakness and stiffness.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Tendonitis: I've been having some knee pain for the past 6 months. I stand all day at work, 9 hours a day, 6 days per week. PT helped some but the pain always comes back. My family DR. gave me Mobic and a steroid shot. I'm pain free for over a week now. I'm very happy so far. No side effects at all. I thought I was allergic to NSAID's but this is giving me no issues at all. Hopefully it will continue to work well for me.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Fibromyalgia: This is amazing. I have suffered constant and varying levels of pain for over half my life (20 years). I have just started taking Mobic a week ago and am basically pain free. I can exercise for much longer periods with more intensity and do not suffer any pain.

Mobic (meloxicam): I have a severe case of tennis elbow, so I tried acetaminophen, naprosyn, ibuprofen and none of them provided any relief. Then my orthopedist prescribed Mobic....it's done wonders!! I'm 42 years old, 5'7", and 180 pounds, and he prescribed 7.5mg. The pain is almost entirely gone after only three days of taking the drug. Taking Mobic has allowed me to sleep at night!

Mobic (meloxicam) for Rheumatoid Arthritis: Mobic has been a good drug for all the basic inconveniences of arthritis. I was this close to going in for a knee replacement when my Geriatric Specialist offered Mobic. I take Pepcid with it as it is very hard on the stomach, but it has increased my mobility and reduced the pain by 90%. I am very pleased with this drug. Hooray!

Mobic (meloxicam): When I began taking Mobic (7.5 mg twice a day) for my sciatica and lower back pain I felt like I was 10 years younger. I experienced greater flexibility and generally felt good all over. However after a couple of months on this dosage I began to experience dizziness and shortness of breath. My doctor found that I was very anemic due to blood loss somewhere in my body to the point where I had to be hospitalized and received 2 units of blood. I had no history of ulcers or other internal bleeding. In addition to taking the maximum dosage of Mobic I was also taking a baby aspirin once a day. My advice is to take as small a dose as possible for as short a time as possible and NEVER use when taking aspirin.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Fibromyalgia: Mobic has made an incredible difference to my fibromyalgia. This time last year I could hardly walk ... I was tired of the never ending pain. Now I go for a walk 4 days per week and I can move so much better. I can sleep at night as well.

Mobic (meloxicam) for Osteoarthritis: Was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knee today. Pain was so bad last night, I only slept on and off. I was in tears and the spasms were constant. 600mg of ibuprofen didn't touch it. My doctor prescribed Mobic and Osteo Bi-flex. Took my first dose at 2pm. By 8pm that evening all pain and spasms were gone and I will be able to sleep pain free tonight. I am so happy I could cry - ... I can walk without limping or shuffling for the first time in 2 weeks.
